MSWPS Featured Artist - Kate Howard

The featured artist section of the website regularly highlights a Full Member Artist. The artist will have won an award at the latest Changing Perspectives exhibition or the MSWPS Award, chosen by the artist’s peer members.

Currently featured is Kate Howard - Wine Vessel 5. Kate was the winner of the Valda Cumming Award for Sculpture at the 2024 Annual Exhibition.

Artist Statement:

wine vessel is from an ongoing series which invites examination of the materials and objects we leave behind, inviting the viewer to see the everyday, or undervalued, in a new light.

Known for her interdisciplinary approach, Howard works concurrently with materials as disparate as glass, ceramic, cement, copper, wire and fibre, integrating knowledge and methods from different studio disciplines. She values curiosity and understanding of technique to challenge the possibilities and inherent qualities of a medium.

In this instance post-consumer glassware is sourced, and skilfully hand cut and ground. Tiffany lamp making techniques are meticulously applied to create a form. The shape of the original object directly informs the structure of the final artwork, which hints at its original use.
