MSWPS Featured Artist - SUE JARVIS

Gulsen Ozer, oil on canvas. THE ANNIE DAVISON OLIVER AWARD

Judges Comment: This a commanding and confident portrait with a soft and intriguing tonal palette. The inclusion of whimsical elements like the moving figures in the wallpaper add a keen sense of interest and bring a liveliness to both the composition and our impression of the sitter. Her gaze beyond the viewer gives a sense of a self-assured and confident woman and hints at her intellectual engagement with the world around her.

Artist statement: Gulsen Ozer is a creative artist specialising in movement and dance. She has worked with Sue Jarvis on community projects in the Arts. This painting is a study for a much larger work which was a finalist in the Shirley Hannan Portrait Prize, Bega NSW. In this study, the artist sought to capture Gulsen's natural grace.
