MSWPS FACETS
In conjunction with the Annual Exhibition, Changing Perspectives, MSWPS Archivist Robyn Pridham has coordinated a display of MSWPS memorabilia that features the artwork of three sculptors, prolific in their chosen discipline in the past 100 years. Ola Cohn, Valda Cuming OAM and Suzanne Kaldor.
Ola Cohn, who we gratefully acknowledge and bequeathed the use of her home for our society’s meetings, traveled to England and studied under Henry Moore. She returned to Australia and after a studio in Collins Street, purchased Ola’s Home in 1937. Ola is well-known for her Fairies tree in the Fitzroy Gardens. Three bronze sculptures were recently featured in the Dangerously Modern exhibition. Read a review of this show in the News items.
Valda Cuming OAM, was a dedicated multi-disciplined artist, who mainly created sculpture using a vast range of materials and found objects. MSWPS Annual Sculpture Award acknowledges her long contribution to the society. Valda was a MSWPS member for twenty-five years and received her OAM for services to the Arts.
Suzanne Kaldor joined MSWPS in 2003. Her art training includes a Certificate of drafting from the University of Budapest, two years of Ceramic study at Caulfield Institute of Technology, four years Postgraduate studies in Fine Art Majoring in Sculpture and Printmaking. Full time Graphic Communication at Hawthorn Teachers Training at Catholic Education Art and R.E. “I love reading, researching, learning. I have a very inquisitive mind.”
MSWPS Facets includes items from the archives such as early exhibition catalogues, A Brief History of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors 1901-59, a copy of the Society Rules that states:. 1. The subscription be Three Guineas per annum.
The display at the East Melbourne Library continues until 31 October.
