Turning 80: 4 Decades of Painting the Landscape
In celebration of her 80th year, Steffie Wallace is showcasing eighty artworks from across four decades of painting.
From traditional style landscapes in and around the Hurstbridge region in the 1990’s to her atmospheric sky scapes in 2026, her medium traverses oil and acrylic painting on a variety of paper, wood panels, stretched canvas and linen.
Steffie states: This exhibition, taking place in my 80th year, comprises paintings from the 1990s through to the 2020s: four decades from when I first began painting landscapes in this format.
Held at the Bayley Arts Gallery in Highett, Skye Jeffreys from Gallery Jones officially opened the exhibition and welcomed all to take some slow looking time with artworks, to delve deep into the atmospheric depth of the works and hopefully engage with nature on a personal level. Inspired to look, I stood on my balcony on Sunday night to view the Blue Moon.
Turning 80… is a very worthy exhibition to spend time with as it shows the evolution of an artist’s thinking and process, chronologically installed this exhibition by Steffie Wallace takes us on journey.
Steffie states: My painting journey began in 1990, when we moved from the inner city to a 20-acre property on top of a hill in the outskirts of Melbourne, following a family tragedy. It was here, visually inspired by vast skies and the changes wrought by the seasons, that I found healing and fulfilment through art which has continued into the present day.
The exhibition continues at Bayley Arts - 1 Avoca Street, Highett until June 27.
